One Island, a lot of adventures!
Tortuguero National Park is one of Costa Rica’s biggest attractions and the great adventure is getting to the island after a boat ride. Soemtimes we passing small villages cut off from the world , which are only supply by ships.
Tortuguero is a typical tourist island consisting of little hotels and restaurants. It is the flagship point of every trip and an absolute “must be” for anyone visiting Costa Rica.
The main and first attraction, from the island’s name (Tortuga- turtle) are turtles coming here, which lay eggs on the nearby beaches. You can watch them only at night, in organized groups and observing many restrictions. Beaches since evening are closed and are guarded by policemen with rifles. On the trip you are not allowed to take pictures, get the flashlights and be brightly dressed so as not to frighten the arriving turtles. Turtles are very shy and often do not get out of the water and trips are canceled.
The second attraction are boat trips around the island. Early in the morning we are able to see the vastness of animals such as birds, geckos, caymans, snakes … and sometimes even a swimng jaguar.
Jaguars are frequent visitors here, and there are warning signs before these animals before entering the jungle. During our walks we saw the turtle’s body half-eaten by this predator.
