50,000 Buddha statues
Yungang Grottoes are a group of about 250 caves located near the city of Datong in northern China. Most of these caves were carved out of the rock during the Wei dynasty (460-525 years) and are an interesting example of sacred art with Indian influences.
There are about 50,000 Buddha statues in the caves, ranging from small statuettes to the largest statue with a height of 17 meters. In individual caves we can observe scenes carved in stone depicting the stories of Buddhism in China and the particular persecution of its followers by the emperors.
There are 20 caves witch you can see , because the remaining ones are either under renovation or have been closed for security reasons. However, this number is enough to admire their beauty and spend a few hours discovering various interesting details carved in stone.
