San Ignacio
San Ignacio is a town in the north of Argentina in the province of Misiones. The name of the province accurately reflects what we can see in San Ignacio and the surrounding area. The ruins of ancient Jesuit missions, founded in the 17th century, have been preserved in this region. These missions were founded to “convert” the indigenous people of Argentina, over time they have evolved into very profitable enterprises, using the cheap labor of local residents. Today, after many centuries, we can come across majestic ruins, which the surrounding jungle, curled branches wishes to picturesquely erase from the surrounding landscape.
The best preserved mission ruins have been on the UNESCO World List since 1984. The mission complex was founded in 1622 and the local population destroyed it in 1817. The San Ignacio mission was inhabited by about 3,000 people during the glory years, and the residential complex consisted of houses, a monastery and a large temple (75 meters long, built of red stone). Today, in to the ruins of the mission area, there is a museum where you can see everyday objects as well as learn about the everyday life in San Ignacio Mini.
