The tallest Buddha
The statue of the Buddha from Leshan was built in the eighth century by the monk Haitong (according to legend, the monk to convince the emperor to build a monument has gouged out his eyes). The sacrifice of the monk Haitong was not in vain and we can still see the 71-meter-high Buddha statue ( tallest in the world).
The monument was built to calm the current of the nearby river and make it navigable for fishermen and traders. The construction, which interrupted over a hundred years, actually helped achieve the goal. As stone was chosen from the river during construction, its course became much softer and you could swim on it.
The Buddha from Leshan is an obligatory trip for every school, thats why it’s extremally big trafic here and the sightseeing is very slow .
