Japanese Alps

Kamikochi National Park is the Azusa mountain river surrounded by the Hotakadake Mountains, which together form a really beautiful pair. Rocky mountains, rushing clean streams and coniferous forests cause that this place is called the Japanese Alps.

The main starting point for the mountains is a campsite near the bus station and it is the best place to set up a camp. On the campsite there is an onsen (hot springs for bathing), a restaurant and tourist equipment rental. Despite the fact that are so many tents (we counted them over 300), there is almost perfect silence and nobody disturbs eachother. We were impressed by the Japanese approach to camping. I would like to add, that over 90-year-old Japanese lady camp near our tent. She came alone for a 3-week vacation . When we got up early in the rainy morning, she was already sitting in front of the tent sipping tea and eating rice.

There are a lot of trails in the mountains and a few shelters where you can crash, so everything is well organized. Organized that extent, that from time to time boards with information appear when the bear was last met in this place.

After mountain trips, we can stroll along the river to admire the beautiful views of the backwaters and rocky beaches.

Kamikochi is definitely a place worthy of attention and 100% recommended by us!
