The oldest city
In 1524, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, occupies an indigenous native settlement and names it Granada, thus establishing the first European city on the American continent. To this day, is a battle beetwen other cities who was first but Granada is at the forefront of the rate, because the records of its establishment can be found in the official writings of the Aragon and Castilian Crowns.
Today’s Granada (around 123,000 inhabitants) is primarily the largest port on Lake Nicaragua and a tourist center. The very well-preserved Spanish buildings, squares and parks mean that the old town of Granada is often visited by tourists. In the evenings, social life thrives on the main street until late at night. Outside the old town, Granada is a less picturesque and safe place.
The trip we recommend is a kayak trip on the waters of the nearby lake, where in addition to the city view, we can take a look at the private islands of the oligarchs.
It is also worth going on an organized trip (only such are posible) for watching the nearby volcano at night. The trip, despite the fact that it is short, is interesting, because we don’t often see the active volcano crater.
