El Chalten and Fitz Roy
The town of El Chalten is a great base for the surrounding mountains and glaciers, but the flagship attraction of this part of Patagonia and basically the whole of Argentina is the Fitz Roy peak (named after Captain of HMS Beagle).
In the Techuelczy language, “Chalten” means a smoky mountain and because of the cloudy and capricious weather it is the most apt name. The mountain itself is about 2,300 meters of vertical wall, very demanding for climbers. The height and difficult climbing conditions make Fitz Roy one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the world.
