Villarrica volcano

The Villarrica volcano is called by the native inhabitants of Mapuche- Rucapillan, meaning the place where one of the most important deities of their mythology – Pillan …. or “the house of the devil lives”. This name fits perfectly with one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world, whose last eruption occurred in 2015. Volcanic eruptions are always violent and involve numerous casualties in people and damaged settlements. Today, the state of volcano activity is constantly monitored, and the city’s evacuation procedures (evacuation paths are marked with special signs) are constantly being practiced.

Climbing begins early in the morning with a group and guide. Our guide, asked about his work, told us about people who are false guides(without appropriate licenses and permits). Recently, the guide participated in the search for such a group, and the bodies of 3 participants have not been found to this day. We get the necessary equipment from the licensed organizer (ice axes, crampons, helmets, etc.) as well as basic training in its use. The volcano itself is 2860 meters high and climbing it takes about 5 hours. The way up is quite demanding, but the view from above rewards all the hardships. Even greater reward and fun is the downhill  on improvised bobsleds!
